Sorbitol is a sugar naturally found in red algae and in the leaves and fruits of plants in the rosaceae family such as pears, apples, plums, quinces, peaches or apricots. In addition, it is used as an additive (E420i or E420ii) to many prepared foods and as an excipient to some medicines and toothpastes.
Intolerance to sorbitol is caused by a problem in the capacity of the intestinal mucosa to absorb sorbitol, which will cause it to reach the large intestine intact, where it will be fermented by the microbiota. As a consequence of this fermentation, a series of chemical products will be generated that are responsible for the symptoms of this process.
The main consequence after the diagnosis of any type of sorbitol intolerance is to start a restrictive diet. To do this, it is always necessary to check the nutritional labelling of a food or the composition of any medicine or toothpaste before consumption and ensure that it is free of sorbitol.
Is is also advisable to limit the consumption of fruits to those that do not contain sorbitol.
