Glucose intolerance tests

It is necessary to go on an empty stomach for the extraction of blood. No previous appointment is necessary, the extractions are made from 8:00h – 10:30h from Monday to Friday.

The results are delivered within 24 hours.

It is performed when a person has normal fasting blood glucose levels, but the possibility of type 2 diabetes mellitus is suspected. This test checks the body’s response to the glucose load and detects the function of insulin, the hormone that regulates blood glucose levels.

Diabetes is a disease in which there are high concentrations of glucose in the blood. It can be of two types; type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2).

The difference between these two types of diabetes is that DM1 develops because the patient’s own immune system produces a destruction of the cells where insulin is produced, a hormone necessary for blood glucose to pass into the cells. This tends to appear mainly in infants and young people. However, DM2 can affect people of any age, and even if the pancreas does produce insulin, it is not enough for glucose to pass from the blood into the body’s cells. Obesity and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to this type of diabetes and its onset can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle.

The complications that both diabetes can cause are:

  • Heart problems
  • Nephropathies
  • Neuropathies
  • Diabetic foot
  • Vision-related problems
  • Bone and joint disorders
  • Skin complications
  • Problems in the digestive system
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Tooth and gum problems

That is why it is so important to detect in time if we suffer from this disease.
