The homocysteine test measures the amount of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is a type of amino acid, a chemical that the body uses to make proteins. Normally, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, and folic acid break down homocysteine into other substances that the body needs. There should be very little homocysteine left in the bloodstream. High homocysteine levels in the blood can be a sign of a vitamin deficiency, heart disease, or a rare inherited disorder.
High homocysteine levels in pregnancy can be a risk factor for pre-eclampsia. In addition, folate deficiency and high homocysteine levels may be involved in fetal vascular damage.
