Lactose intolerance may be due to a low production of the enzyme lactase, which if it occurs in the newborn is called congenital lactose intolerance. In this case, the newborn will show the symptoms of the disease from the first moment of lactation.

A decrease in the capacity to produce lactase can occur at any stage of life, due to an alteration of the gene responsible for its synthesis, leading to malabsorption of lactose. Therefore, this illness is a metabolic intolerance produced by a deficit of the enzyme lactase that causes lactose to be undigested and therefore not properly absorbed, triggering symptoms of abdominal bloating, fatigue, diarrhea
