You must come to the laboratory to collect the SIBO exhaled air test kit. At the time of collection of the kit, the procedure to be followed is explained to you, which is detailed below. As with all exhaled air tests, air must be collected in a tube prior to ingestion of a substrate, and then collected every 25 minutes for 3 hours. The sample must be brought to the laboratory by 12:00pm on the day of sample delivery.
- Systematic to follow:
- No antibiotics, intestinal lavage or enteroscopy should have been taken during the 30 days prior to the test.
- It is recommended that probiotics be discontinued for 15 days and prokinetics and laxatives for 7 days prior to sampling.
- Do not consume carbohydrates 24 hours before the start of the test.
- Do not smoke or consume food from 8-12 hours prior to the end of the test.
- Do not do physical exercise at least 30 minutes before the end of the test.
- If you are suffering from diarrhoea, it is better to postpone the test.
Results in 3-4 days. Consult us if you have any doubts.
SIBO, Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, is a bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine. To understand this problem, it is important to bear in mind that our gastrointestinal system is normally full of microorganisms known as gut microbiota, with which we live in symbiosis, forming a perfect balance.
- The function of the intestinal microbiota is both defensive, combating other harmful microorganisms, and nutritional, synthesising vitamins, hormones and other compounds, and behavioural, influencing the mood and behaviour of the individual.
- When there is a cause that alters the balance of the intestinal microbiota, such as stress, a poor diet over a prolonged period of time, among others, the composition and number of microorganisms in the intestinal microbiota becomes unbalanced, giving rise to pathologies.
